Kaivos Festival

The seventh Kaivos Festival takes place on 1st-3rd September 2023 at the old copper mine of Outokumpu, 1km from the center of Outokumpu, Northern Karelia, Eastern Finland. The theme of this year’s festival will be the 62nd latitude of the northern hemisphere. The program, including contemporary art music, documentary film, contemporary dance and linguistic lectures among others, can be seen here.

Travelling to Outokumpu

Public transport

From Helsinki, Lahti, Kouvola or Lappeenranta: train to Joensuu and then a bus to Outokumpu Kaupungintalo.
From Tampere, Jyväskylä, Oulu or Mikkeli: train to Kuopio and then a bus to Outokumpu Kaupungintalo.
From Turku: Take the train either to Kuopio or to Joensuu, depending on the timetables, then a bus to Outokumpu Kaupungintalo.
Alternatively: you can also take train to Viinijärvi if you have a bike with you. It is 15 kilometres from Viinijärvi to Outokumpu.

Bus tickets from Kuopio/Joensuu to Outokumpu you can buy on www.matkahuolto.fi. Search for a bus to “Outokumpu kaupungintalo” (Outokumpu city hall) or Outokummun linja-autoasema (Outokumpu bus station). From the bus stops there is a 300- 750m walk to Kummunkatu 21, which is the main festival address. Turn left after the church and when you see the old mining area, you have arrived.
You can also check busses to a stop with a name Ulla, gas station located 5 kilometres from Outokumpu. Some busses between Kuopio and Joensuu stop only at Ulla, without coming to the centre of Outokumpu.

Travelling by car

Parking is available at the festival site, Kummunkatu 21, Outokumpu (next to Kiisu-teatteri) and Kaivosmiehenpolku 2 (next to the Festival Restaurant Vanha Paja).

Accommodation

In Outokumpu there is one hotel (hotellikumpu.fi) and one guest house (kyykerinkartano.fi) located 0,5 km from the festival area.

There is also a Särkiselkä Camping located at a beautiful lake shore 5 kilometers from the festival venue.

Tickets

The tickets can be bought in our ticket site as well as in the festival cafe.

The lectures on Friday 18.00, on Saturday 10.00, 16.30 and 17.15 and Sunday 10.00 are free of charge. They are mostly held in Finnish, the lecture about Komi language and Komi society on Saturday at 10.00 includes also part in English.
